In class we identify three types of pipeline hazards that prevent perfect instruction execution. Structural hazards are relatively simple to discuss. They occur over contention between instructions for a hardware resource, so providing additional hardware resources is the solution. Data hazards are our primary focus on optimization, in part because we can create examples in which data dependence is easy to see. Without a lot of extra information we can look at a data dependence relationship and readily tell whether that relationship will be problematic in our simple pipeline. That leaves control hazards, and in this paper you will explore an interesting method for dealing with control hazards. The method is called predicated execution, and there are a couple of levels. In this paper you must: Describe the general predicated execution approach. Discuss the difference between partial and full predication, providing examples. Identify at least one processor that uses predication, with a brief overview of how it works on that CPU. Provide at least one before/after code example showing the original branch and the corresponding predicated code. You must explain how the predicated code works at a level beyond simply repeating what is said in //comments. Conclude with a personal reaction. What do you think of it? Your paper should include a minimum of three references, which should be properly cited throughout. Failure to do so will seriously impact your score. There is no length requirement, but write the paper as if the reader does not know anything about predication. This is not a group assignment, please do your own work.
