Help me with server administration

My Wordpress website is showing "Error establishing a database connection" and when I try to access the DB using phpMyAdmin I get Cannot log in to the MySQL server. I can see my files on the server. But when I run "service mysql start" all I get is No such file or directory I could do with some help please.
