Redesign App Icon for photography related program

We need to update the app icon of a software program that runs on Windows and Mac desktop/laptop computers. The app is named Photomatix Essentials and its purpose is to merge photographs taken at varying exposures and enhance the merged output. The current icon for the app is in the attached [login to view URL] file. We want to update the design of this icon for the next version of the app (which is due to be released soon). We wish to take this occasion to redesign the icon rather than just update its design, i.e. start from a completely different idea to design the icon. The new idea I suggest to start with is in the attached [login to view URL] file. Note, however, that this image has for only purpose to show an idea. It is meant as a starting point, and not something that would be close to the final icon design. Also, I am open to suggestions of other ideas, as long as they are well suited to what the app is about. Note that this icon will be mostly viewed at a small or very small resolution. So, the design should be as simple as possible, so that people can still recognise its main theme even when it is displayed very small.
