Gneral idea
1. put an icon on the browser (IE or FF or both ,deends on your skills )
2. once clicked ,it will open a dummy form
3. icon should be able to be changed to other icon while surfing the web
ok this bid contain your help in where exactly can put the icon

just 1 little comment about IE , IE has many versions
so if you sugegst some idea ,that idea should fit all IE versions

i need a firefox add on , that will add an icon next to the search textbox .
that icon when clciked will open a form ,that form will have a text box that will show current browser URL address
and another textbox + browse button + another button with the acaption "change icon "
once selecting an icon it will change the icon to selected

Hello, If you want to add a button in toolbar in FF and IE, this can be done in javascript and zool. zool is xml used y firefox for development of UI
This is an good idea, Through the application need to set some registry values for IE for the button and on action need to execute an executable file to change the settings for the button.
