Cocoa traders sell the illegally grown cocoa to major chocolate companies, whose demands drive further deforestation, leading to the destruction of rainforests and threatening endangered species like elephants and chimpanzees. **Update**: Many big chocolate companies have agreed to stop procuring chocolate from endangered areas in West Africa. We now need to make sure that they extend “no deforestation” policies to all their operations globally. Otherwise they will just get their cocoa from a different country and destroy rainforests there.
