We are a university research team developing characterisation methods for solar cells. For one of our research projects we need to short circuit a power supply at a speed of <1 us. The power supply will deliver a current of up to 40 A and a voltage of up to 60 V to a solar module and we need to short circuit the power supply to switch off the current as fast as possible. If there is another way to achieve this result we would appreciate help with this. Outcomes of this project would be a suitable method of achieving our switching requirement + an electronic circuit design that is suitable to perform this task. If the project is completed successfully there is also the potential of a follow on project to actually built the circuit.

Hi, I think you would be better looking at using an IGBT instead. The problem is with MOSFETs is their gate capacitancecauses delays, if your looking to switch < 1uS, you could have issues. If you really must use a MOSFET then look at using a low side driver IC. You should also add a snubber across the power supply as your sketch will ring like crazy. Is the power supply current limited? If not then you need to add a low ohm series resistor with the MOSFET source or drain, if you dont you will end up blowing the MOSFET every time. Also how long is the MOSFET to be switched on for? If prolonged periods of time then you will need a heatsink and possibly a fan to keep it cool. Kind Regards, Ken.

This is my first project on this site, so am keen to build up my 'reputation', hence I am happy to offer this job at minimal cost to you. I spent a few years designing high power switched-mode power supplies for aircraft, so I know a thing or two about DC power switches. Regarding your sketch, I don't much like the idea of directly shorting out the PSU with a parallel MOSFET. Even though the switch may be in it's linear region for only a short period of time, you'll need quite a large Safe Operating Area (SOA) for the MOSFET. Even if the PSU folds-back, all of the energy from it's output capacitor will be dumped into the MOSFET. Heat-sinking won't help either, because you can't get the energy out of the part fast enough as heat. I predict that unless you have an enormous MOSFET, or you compromise on your 1us requirement, you will blow the MOSFET off the board. I have in the past embedded MOSFETs into the ceiling by doing what you are proposing! If you just want to turn the thing off quickly, a series high-side MOSFET would be a safer way to go. I would be inclined to use a fast high-side N-Channel MOSFET, with a high-side controller chip, such as the LTC7000 from Linear Technology. Remember also that because you have put a diode in your sketch, any residual energy in your 'solar module' probably wont dissipate in under 1us, even if you turn to power off quickly. If you want me to do the job, I can put a SPICE simulation together to verify my proposal. Kind Regards, Ben

Hi, I'm an electronics engineer specializing in power electronics. if your goal is to cut the current as soon as possible why not use a high-speed low resistance switch in series with the circuit you presented? which will also eliminate the need for the series diode(better to avoid the voltage drop of the diode and power loss). I'd love to hear more about your project's requirements to decide further, ping me for more details.

Hello, I saw your image circuit diagram. I do the same types of project for my Solar Cell design project. I actually design my project in Matlab Simulink platform. So if you give me some exact direction which platform should I use then I can easily do this work.I also used to work in other software like multisim, pispice etc I bid on a low price because I think your instruction and this project Experience help me also in my project. thnx

Hi, i have custom-build 2kW (600V) PWM solar controller (it was for educational purpose), and form that project i have learned most of effects which could cause the problems switching high currents. There will be some difficulties with capacitance of power source and released energy in such short period of time. We can discuss further in chat and sort out details. Please note that i can deliver: PCB drawing, electrical schematic, bill of materials, and if you wish, even working prototype. Please let us know what will trigger the mosfet. Best regards.

It's a very bad idea to short circuit the power supply. Use a half brige with SiC Mosfet. I don´t want to do this proyect.
