DataTables sorting assistance

The dataTable plugin i am using needs to be altered to allow for proper formatting when a currency field is being used. In other words, when I format a field for currency in the table, the sorting option does not work properly. Some code needs to be added to let the DataTables know that it's a currency.

How the currency field actually should be sorted? Alphabetic or in any other way? I am not sure how the symbolic character should sort. Can you kindly clarify it?
