  This contest was really interesting. I have carefully read all the entries - ranging from painful to delightful - and it there two very good ones from which it was very hard to select a winner. I have selected the one that had, in my opinion, the best description of the characters inner feelings, since that is what this thread of the story will need most.

  Hello. I'm not sure if you have mentioned this before, but could I ask what the geographical setting of this story is supposed to be? I currently have it set around the Florida Keys to provide a good number of options for the island, but I am unsure if that is what you want.

     The contests are for the same book but different action threads. The second one has more dialog, action and scenes presenting technical details, so it might require a different writing style. That is one of the reason i thought it might need two writers. The second reason is that it would be faster if there will be a writer for each thread :)
     But yes, anyone can send entries to either contest.

  A couple more specifications.:
  
  - please do not venture into describing what is being protected on that island or what is the alien's motivation. At this point, there should not be any clue about that. The aliens are attacking Earth, first targeting defense structures and ships ( they would not differentiate between a destroyer and a yacht ) for a very specific reason that will be revealed later in the book. In this stage, they dont purposely try to maximize human casualties, so they would not dedicate a squadron of bombing ships to kill swimmers.
  
  - it is preferable that the kids do not have no strong family ties in the world they leave behind ( hence Alice's estranged parents and Mary/Ellis being orphans ). You are free to change that, but they will still have to get to the island alone, without other family or crew members ( or navy soldiers ).

  Contest holder, I don't think you got my question. Based on my understanding of the plot, it said that a protective sheild was activated around the entire island with the kids trapped in. Is it their aim to break the shield by searching for the source? Moreover the space ships are still raining down bombs, won't they be exposed to danger by breaking the shield?

     If I may interfere. Temidayo, the kids do not want to destroy the shield -nor the source of it- on the contrary, they see that mysterious power as their "only hope". That is why they are trying to find it. That's how I understand it. I hope that helps! I am working on a proposal as well, I just hope to finish the word-count! :) good luck everyone!

     Thank you Lorenza. Yes, that is how i imagined it. After all, that shield was activated either to protect something ( which means it is worth finding what ) or the kids themselves ( in which case it is a call or an invitation ). In any case, as you have said, it is their best hope.

  Hello contest holder,i don't understand the last part of the plot. I quote"The kids agree that their only solution is to go towards the source of the shield". Please why should they find the light a source if it protects them from the bombs from the ships?

     The source is inside the shield. The rest is a deserted island and they have no means to leave it. Besides, it looks like there is a war raging on out there, so it is very unlikely to find a safe place.
     Nowhere else to go.
